Simple balance exercises to prevent falls at home
5 min read

Better balance means more confidence in everyday life. Try these four safe exercises at home, with a sturdy counter nearby for support.
Falls are not a normal part of getting older. Balance is a skill, and like any skill, it gets better with practice.
Before you start
Stand next to a kitchen counter or sturdy chair, wear supportive shoes and clear the floor around you.
1. Feet together stand
Stand with your feet together for 30 seconds. When it feels easy, try it with your eyes closed, holding the counter.
2. Heel-to-toe stand
Place one foot directly in front of the other, like standing on a tightrope. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch feet.
3. Single-leg stand
Hold the counter and lift one foot off the floor. Work up to 30 seconds on each side.
4. Sit to stand
From a chair, stand up without using your hands, then slowly sit back down. Repeat 10 times.
